Elongated processes are long, slender extensions of cells that play critical roles in the structure and function<\/a> of various cell types in the body. These processes are especially prominent in neurons and glial cells within the nervous system, as well as in fibroblasts within connective tissues. Elongated processes have different names and functions, depending on the cell type they are associated with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Axons: Axons are elongated processes of neurons responsible for transmitting electrical impulses away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands. They are critical for communication between cells within the nervous system. Axons can vary greatly in length, with some extending over a meter in the human body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Dendrites: Dendrites are branched, elongated processes of neurons that receive electrical or chemical signals from other cells and transmit them to the cell body. Dendrites increase the surface area of the neuron, allowing it to receive input from multiple sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Oligodendrocyte processes: Oligodendrocytes are a type of glial cell in the central nervous system. They extend multiple elongated processes that wrap around axons, forming the myelin sheath.
