It is called &#8220;rough&#8221; because its outer surface is studded with ribosomes, which give it a textured appearance when viewed under a microscope. The RER plays a crucial role in protein synthesis, folding, and quality control, as well as the synthesis of certain lipids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key functions of the rough endoplasmic reticulum include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protein synthesis: The ribosomes attached to the RER are the sites of protein synthesis.
